Types o Computer
Types of computers are based upon the purpose, functioning and size of the computer. Accordingly they are classified into four types:
Digital Computer
A distinctive feature of a digital computer is that it computers by counting and adding operations. Digital computers are much faster than analog computers.
Micro computers
Least powerful type of computers but are the most widely used and growing in the fastest rate.
Hardware peripherals can be attached easily.
Includes Desktop computers, Laptops, tablet pc's, Personal Digital Assistants(PDA) etc.
Desktop Computer
This type computer can be easily set on a desk. That is why they are called Desktop Computers. Since they are small in size and the working capability is more so these types of computers are widely used in offices, houses, schools and colleges, etc. Price of Desktop Computers is very affordable to common people.
Laptop Computer
Laptop Computer or Notebook Computer is smaller and lighter in weight than desktop Computer. This type of computer is easy to carry and when used can set on the lap. That is why it is called Laptop Computers. It runs on a battery.
Palmtop Computer
Palmtop is smaller than Laptop Computer. It is made in such a way that it can be used by placing it on the hand. Palmtop is so small in size that we can keep it in a pocket. It runs on battery.
Mini computers
Less processing speed than mainframe computers.
Departments of large company's uses this type of computers.
They can handle large database and accounting efficiently.
Example: Department of computer monitoring the network traffic of whole company.
Mainframe computers
Capable of performing high processing speed and data storage but not powerful as super computers.
Wired in air-conditioned rooms.
Super computers
Most powerful computers characterized as fastest, very high processing speed and of large data storage.
Specifically used for complex applications by big organization.
Good example is NASA and ISRO uses supercomputers to track and control space discovery.
Example: ISP providers use mainframe computers to process information about millions of internet users.
Analog
An analog computer computes by measuring changes in a continuous physical phenomenon such as electronic voltage, length, current, temperature, etc. The devices that measure such quantities are analog. The advantages of analog computer are that all the calculation takes place in parallel and hence these are faster but their accuracy is poor.
Hybrid Computer
The hybrid computer uses both the analog and digital components. These computers use digital memory for the storage and analog devices for computational purpose.
